Main Idea: To understand an individuals social media and selfies, one can look at it as a series of self representation.
Key terms:
Polaroid: material in thin plastic sheets that produces a high degree of plane polarization in light passing through it.
Femininity: the quality of being female; womanliness.
Structural proclivities: a tendency to choose or do something regularly; an inclination or predisposition toward a particular thing.
Cumulative Self-Presentations: Consists of continuously expanded collections of posts.
Micro-Narrative: A comment that expresses an aspect of the writer or an image showing a version of themselves.
Hyper-textual: Text which is not constrained to be linear. Contains links to other texts.
Summary: According the third chapter in “Seeing Ourselves Through Technology”, the author states that self-representation is not only older than social media itself, but can be seen in the form of a series. These series can be seen in the form of two groups, cumulative and serial. Cumulative self-representation is in the form of social media and weblogs. People also use time lapse selfies which are photos that are taken over an extended period of time frame to show how an individual changes over time. Some people consider this to be an art form. Selfies are becoming an issue of slef image and self identity to where we are still de-familiarizing with reality.
Commentary: The author is using patterns of describing details in very artistic forms. Still does not give a clear concise answer on what he/she is trying to prove from all of this. I do like that she is saying that the art form of photos in general has started to shape how we even view ourselves. It ruins our identity.
